Prof. Emeritus Aharon Ben-Tal joined the faculty in 1981. He received his Ph.D in Applied Mathematics from Northwestern University in 1973.

Prior to joining our Faculty Prof Ben-Tal was a Senior Lecturer, Department of Computer Science, Technion (1975-1979) and Visiting Associate Professor, Department of Mathematical Sciences, University of Delaware (1979-1980). He also held academic positions in numerous distinguished research institutions including; University of British Columbia, University of Michigan, University of Copenhagen, Delft, MIT, Columbia and NYU.

Prof. Ben-Tal has held a number of administrative and academic roles in the Technion Including two terms as Dean of the Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Management (1989-1992) and (2011-2014) and he is the Holder of the Dresner Chair in Methods Engineering.

His research interests are in Continuous Optimization, particularly nonsmooth and large-scale problems, conic and robust optimization, as well as convex and nonsmooth analysis. In Recent years the focus of his research is on optimization problems affected by uncertainty. He has devoted much effort to engineering applications of optimization methodology and computational schemes.

Prof. Ben-Tal received along the years abundant of distinctions and awards among which; 2007 EURO Gold Medal, 2009 Fellow of INFORMS, 2015 Fellow of SIAM.

Lifetime achivment prize award by ORSIS (Operation Reseasearch Society of Israel).

Keychain Prize by INFORMS for lifetime achivment in Optimization.
