General Information
There are two main tracks for graduate studies in statistics:
- Applied and theoretical statistics
- Probability and stochastic processes
Program Academic Staff
The Technion has a varied group of Probability and Statistics researchers. Their fields of study include:
- Statistical theory, multiple comparisons, applied statistics;
- Queue theory, service systems, and data processing as it relates to the analysis and planning of these systems;
- Stochastic processes in a number of contexts:
- Stochastic processes and their uses in physics;
- Gaussian processes;
- Markov processes and regenerative processes;
- Stochastic systems;
- Stochastic analysis (stochastic partial differential equations);
- Interacting particle systems;
- Diffusion measurement systems and their uses.
After Graduation
M.Sc. graduates of either track can expect to find work in industry either as statisticians or in stochastic operations research (e.g., in mathematical finance, service systems planning and control, or combinations of the above with large data systems). Graduates who excel in their master’s studies will be eligible to continue towards a doctorate, should they so wish, with a view to pursuing a career in academia or industry.
Program Length and Structure
The M.Sc. program comprises two years of studies, held in the morning, and combines coursework with submission of a research thesis or final project, depending on the chosen track. The tracks and program requirements are described in more detail under M.Sc. Studies, below.

Curriculum
Three M.Sc. tracks are available – a research track, a project track, and a final assignment track.
- Research track – Students in the research track submit a research thesis at the end of their studies. Students in this track are required to complete 24 credits of graduate courses. (Students holding a three-year bachelor’s degree may use some of the credits from their supplementary courses towards this total, with the amount to be decided at the time of admission to the program or later on in consultation with their supervisor.)
- Project track – Students in the project track submit a project at the end of their studies. Students in this track are required to complete 24 credits of graduate courses. (Students holding a three-year bachelor degree may use some of the credits from their supplementary courses towards this total, with the amount to be decided at the time of admission to the program or later on in consultation with their supervisor.)
- Final assignment track – Students in this track submit a final assignment – smaller in scale than either a research thesis or a project – at the end of their studies. Students in this track are required to complete 32 credits of graduate courses. (Students holding a three-year bachelor degree may use some of the credits from their supplementary courses towards this total, with the amount to be decided at the time of admission to the program or later on in consultation with their supervisor.)
The length of the M.Sc. program is normally two years, for students with no supplementary course requirements, and up to three years for students who need to complete supplementary courses.
Courses are generally chosen from the statistics curriculum detailed below. It should be noted that not all the courses listed are offered every year. With permission from a supervisor, students may also take other courses offered by the Faculty, or suitable courses in other faculties. In special cases, and with the authorization of the head of statistics and the Faculty’s coordinator of graduate studies, students may take statistics courses at other research universities in Israel.

Courses on this list are not all offered every year, and some are not even offered every two years. In addition more courses may be added to the list during the student study time. It is therefore recommended that students considering taking a course from this list should do so at the earliest opportunity during their studies when it is on offer. Furthermore, concentrated study days will be given every Thursday at the Tel-Aviv University which will offer three courses open for Master Students from all over the country. Those courses may be taken as elective courses as well. Courses from other Master programs given in the Faculty, which are relevant to the student research, may be taken as elective courses with the permission of the academic supervisor.
Prerequisites/Supplementary Courses
The following courses are prerequisites for graduate studies in statistics. In most cases, candidates for the program will already have completed these courses, or their equivalents, during their undergraduate studies. If not, they will be required to take these courses as part of their supplementary course requirements, with a credit weighting to be decided individually upon their admission to the program.
