Jonathan Halpern was born in Israel, was married to Maya, and had two children. After obtaining his Ph.D. in Operations Research at the University of California, he joined the Faculty of Industrial Engineering and Management, Technion in 1970. He served as a Visiting Professor at The Institute of Mathematical Statistics and Operations Research, The Technical University of Denmark in 1975, at the University of Toronto (1975-1976), and Universite de Montreal (1978). He also held a Professorship at the Faculty of Management, University of Calgary, Alberta, Canada (1979). Jonathan specialized in networks, location theory, and emergency service operations theory. He held many grants in these fields and achieved important theoretical and practical results.
He served as a consultant and research associate for several government agencies in Israel, England and Denmark, and participated actively in numerous international conferences as presenter and chairman. He published over twenty papers in prestigious journals, and served as a reviewer for Mathematical Reviews and OR/MS.
Jonathan was a very popular and liked mentor and teacher. He advised over ten graduate students before he passed away.
His untimely sudden death was a great loss to the faculty and to his fields of specialization.
